    Hello from Sacramento.

Just saying hello, I am planing out a aquaponics setup for my living room and patio that I should have completed within a month.
I've been reading some guides and topics on the forums here and have one quick question. Do all of your plants have to be transplants or can and be started from seeds without soil?

    welcome to our forum
depends on your system, if raft for most no for the most part,
if it is a flood and drain system, auto type system with media, sure they will germinate.
i use peat pellets because of germination. if the some of the seeds do not germinate i will have bare spots that will have to be reseeded and will be behind in growth.

Thanks very much, I have an idea for a system to be hopefully 100% self contained I'll post it in the proper area.

    Welcome to the forum.

I start seeds in the gravel bed, by just extending my stand pipes temporarily to keep the top of the gravel moist, but not wet and then lower it to normal once the seedlings have put down roots. Normal for me is 4".
