Stand alone (non aquaponic) wicking beds

HI, I don't have enough places to grow... ...so, I 've been messing around with more wicking bed set ups.

This is actually a build that I made for a friend of mine. He has a house, with no garden of any kind. This is an instant garden for him.
No, it's not 'aquaponics'...but it can be watered with AP water.
In FL, most of our 'soil' is mostly sand with lots of nematodes... This is an easy way to get away from them.

I cut a 55 gallon barrel in half. Then drilled some holes.
The upper holes aid in 'air pruning' of the roots.
The lower ones set the water level...approx 6 inches.......

I added a section of landscape fabric. It keeps the dirt in and the light out....

The pvc goes into the perf pipe. This is the heart of the set up. When filled, the water, bottom feeds the plants. Plus, it can go days without needing more water....

    Here it is in place......

Here it is finished. When my buddy saw it...he was grinning ear to ear...
I made a heavy duty tomato cage from a section of cattle panel.
I already planted one of my tomato suckers that I rooted, plus, a few kale plants, a sugar pea or two and some leaf lettuce.
Now, we just need to transport it to his house..
