    Ph adjustment question

    Hey Guys,

The other day an old dude told me that he uses vinegar and baking soda to adjust ph up and down. Any problems with this idea in an aquaponics system?

I don't normally mess with the PH much but this seems like a decent source. Perhaps you could substitute gypsum or oyster shell instead of the baking soda.

    Thanks,

You can, but I'm not big on messing with pH.

vinegar will harm the bacteria population which damages the system. avoid lemon juice as it has the same effect.

i know shell grit and egg shells will buffer up the PH but has anyone tried Baking Soda to raise PH in an emergency?
I currently do not have eggs or shells...

Yes, you can buffer with baking soda, but do so only a tiny bit at a time. I prefer to keep seachem prime on hand. The pH problem is usually more than just acid, like something rotting in the water.
