How do I kick start my snew system?

I'm sorry if this is posted some where, but I can't seem to find it. i am looking for specific steps on starting a new system. I have read that I should pee in the tank. A friend told me to put gold fish to introduce beneficial bacteria. I am looking for some detailed info on kick starting my system. Like most people around here I am learning and want to minimize as much loss as possible. I don't have chemicals in my water since it is pumped up from a well. I am hoping to get fish some time next week but I want to be sure my system is ready for them before I get them.
    Thanks for the help.
