What exactly is the purpose of a Sump?
Why do some systems have them and some not?

This section isn't for questions about sumps, it is for off-topic ideas.

Sumps are optional, but a great thing to have. They are low points in your system, ideal for placement of your pump and a collection point for junk so it can easily be removed.

Hi wh33t, In a flood and drain set up...as the media bed fills with water, the level in your fish tank will/could go down. If you have several media beds, you might run out of water in the fish tank, if they happen to all be filling at one time.

Having a sump (as large as your media beds) , you stop this problem. Also, the more water you have...the more stable your system becomes....less tempt swings, ph swings, ect.

This space is provided for non-aquaponics/hydroponics discussions - like if you want to wish someone a happy anniversary or birthdays, rant about your latest run in with your favorite government bureaucrat, ask someone how to change the transmission in your car (j/k), or any other non-serious aquaponics discussions. If we keep the aquaponics discussions in the appropriate forums provided, visitors to our forum will have an easier time finding the answers to their questions. If you don't find the aquaponics forum heading you're looking for, please PM one of the moderators or the admin, or post in "SPEAK UP" and we'll get right on it if it's truly needed. Some of the headings here have been added just by suggestions and requests. Thanks, THE TEAM :!:

The reason some forums have SUMPS and some do not is up to the moderators/administrators of the forum. You're just lucky we have one!
