I am interested in raising tilapia or catfish and I am looking at various tanks to get a start. I was close to getting an IBC tote, but that didn't work out and I am looking at some rubbermaid tanks at Tractor Supply (here is a similar tank http://www.rubbermaidforless.com/rubber ... o-150.html (http://www.rubbermaidforless.com/rubbermaid-4245-gallon-capacity-stock-watering-tank-product_info-150.html)). Is there any minimum depth for a fish tank? There seem to be lots of tanks that are around 2 feet deep, but I thought I read somewhere that you should have a minimum depth of 3 feet. It seems like there are lots of fish living in shallow water, but I wanted to see if anyone had any advice. Is there a minimum depth for fish tanks?

I use 100 gallon stock tanks and they work fine, so a 150 would be no problem. 18" deep is enough.

Paint the inside of the tank white. Otherwise you'll have a hard time seeeing the fish. I've seen other tanks that are blue rather than black. Might be a better choice.

the 3 foot rule has to do with herons and raccoons . and it has to have straight sides. but this is for outside. here in san jose, ca both of those are a problem.

A deeper tank at lower stocking densities also helps with the fish jumping out. There are less "fish out of water" with a deeper tank, typically.
