The cichlidae fish family has 1300 varieties, including many small home aquarium types, and the Tilapia branch of the clan has over a hundred different species and countless naturally occurring hybrids.

I would like to compile a list of popular hybrids, preferably with average growth rates, temperature tolerances, breeding habits, aggression, coloration (maybe pictures), and any special comments regarding the specific strain.

I will try to compile a comprehensive list in this thread based on feedback from you guys and whatever research I can find.

I will try to post genetic information where available.

Hybrid Blue/Nile & Rocky Mountain White

Hybridization:
Blue Tilapia (O. aureus sp.) X Nile Tilapia (O. niloticus sp.)

Average Growth Rate:

Lower Temp 100% Mortality:
45 Fahrenheit

Upper Temp 100% Mortality:
upwards of 100 Fahrenheit

Breeding Habits:
Prolific breeders

Temperament:
known to be as aggressive as the Nile

Coloration:
usually rather dark; also, light-colored hybrid breed known as "Rocky Mountain White"

Strain Specific Traits:
Considered the fastest growing hybrid. They grow as fast as Nile, but have the cold tolerance of a Blue. They are considered as effective filter feeders as the Blue strain; therefore, fast green-water pond culture becomes feasible.

Oreochromis aurea x Oreochromis nilotica hybrid, Rocky Mountain White

Pennyfish™ / Florida Red Tilapia

Hybridization:
female Mozambique Tilapia (O. mossambica sp.) X male Wami Tilapia (O. hornorum sp.)

Average Growth Rate:
2.2 pounds in 6 months (so they claim)

Pennyfish™
1,000 grams in 180 days yields 440 grams fillet (44% fillet).

versus

Nilotica Sex Reversed and GMT Fish Hybrid
1,000 grams in 400-460 days yields 380 grams fillet (38% fillet).

These growth tests show the final period of time estimated for 95% of a group of Tilapia to reach the goal, results located on the Aquatic Network, LLC website.

Lower Temp 100% Mortaility:
60 Fahrenheit

Upper Temp 100% Mortality:
95-110 Fahrenheit

Breeding Habits:
Prolific breeders

Temperament:
unknown

Coloration:
Orange, fingerlings look like mean goldfish

Strain Specific Traits:
Pennyfish™ hybrid grows from 10 grams to 600 grams in approximately 150 days and grows so evenly that almost all of them can be harvested within a 2 to 3 week period. Also, this method produces 100% males with pure strain breeders.

Taiwanese Red Tilapia

Hybridization:
Mozambique Tilapia (O. mossambicus sp.) X Nile Tilapia (O. niloticus sp.)

Average Growth Rate:
1 pound in 6-7 months, 1.5 pounds in 8-9 months

Lower Temp 100% Mortaility:
? Fahrenheit

Upper Temp 100% Mortality:
? Fahrenheit

Breeding Habits:

Temperament:
unknown

Coloration:
orange to red

Strain Specific Traits:
high salinity tolerance, easily 30% salinity with negligible mortality

Information put together by our friends at White Brook Tilapia. Below are some experimentally determined results for crossing Tilapia and their resulting male percentages:

O. macrochir male crossed to female of:
O. mossambicus - 100% male (Majumdar, 1983)
O. spilurus - 97.9% male (Majumdar, 1983)
O. niloticus - 100% male (Pruginin, 1967)

O. niloticus male crossed to female of:
O. aureus - 75-95% males (Pruginin, 1967)
O. horonorum - 75% males (Pruginin, 1967)

O. aureus male crossed to female of:
O. niloticus - 50-100% male (Lee, 1979 and Wohlfarth, 1994)... unpredictable results in several studies
O. niloticus (Stirling strain) - 100% male (Marengoni, 1998)
O. niloticus (Uganda strain) - 96-100% male (Proginin, 1975)
O. mossambicus - 100% male (Beardmore, 2001)

O. mossambicus male to female of:
O. aureus - 89% male (Pierce, 1980)

O. hornorum male to female of:
O. niloticus - 100% male (Lee, 1979 and Wohlfarth, 1990)

You can also cross many fish from the Tilapia genus with fish from the Oreochromis genus and get all males/mostly males (White Brook Tilapia, 2010).

We have them in Blue Springs. From what I have seen, they hybridize with blue tilapia.

RESERVED FOR HYBRIDS.

Hey, Hey, HEY! ...maybe...

Well, perhaps they won't after we finish the list complete with pretty pictures!

Meeting face to face is always a good idea if you have a designated driver....
Rocky whites are good for cold, not for hot. Same goes for pure aurea or niloticus. Mossies are best for heat, salt or other extremes

Any requests on specific hybrids of Tilapia you would like to see?

Hi!

What should be the results of crossing mozambique male x nile female tilapia? Is it a good idea?

Thanks!

I've never gotten the two to breed. I don't think they will.
