Nice pics, thanks .... would you mind pointing out which pic is the swirl filter, and then explaining how a swirl filter works .... many here have probably never heard of a 'swirly', and are just starting up and/or designing their system, so an explanation of how it works would be helpful to all ...... Thanks ;)

No picture of a swirl filter there. I'll dig one out. They allow solids to settle but in most AP systems they are not needed as the gb's filter the solids. I use one but its mainly due to the size and stocking of my system. Does make a nice duckweed tank.
http://i691.photobucket.com/albums/vv276/dufflight/DSC02056.jpghttp://i691.photobucket.com/albums/vv276/dufflight/DSC02149.jpg
Water flows in a circle allowing the solids to settle. Outlet is via a surface pipe that skims the surface. I turn mine around so I can grow duckweed.

Its good at removing solids if you want to compost them or add them to a worm farm.

Very nice Dufflight ! ....Thanks for sharing the pictures.

I'm working on building a swirl filter for my system. (not using rocks/hydroton in my GB's)
I noticed in your picture, of the outside of your larger swirl filter.... you have two (2 inch/50mm) pvc lines ... inlet and outlet perhaps ? Plus, there is a smaller tube, also going into the tank...?....is that an airline ?
I wouldn't think it would be....as that would stir up the water, when your trying to control the flow so the solids collect in the bottom center.

I just looked at the picture again and noticed that one of the larger pvc lines is not hooked to any thing. Is that water flowing out of it ? So perhaps, the smaller line is your water 'in'...? The 2 larger lines are both outlets...?
I've lost one of my primary colors in my monitor...makes it tuff to see well. Spending my $ on aquaponics instead of a new monitor

The 19mm black pipe is the inlet(5000lpr) One of the 100mm PVC's is the outlet the other is blocked off. This swirl filter was used at an aquafarm on a tank system with 40000 fingerlings. I also bleed off some water to go through the 2 round tanks.

The olive drums are handy. I picked up 4 black ones that were used to transport gherkins in brine. A lot of Ag shops carry them. Cost is $10 to $25. They can't be re-used for original use so there are a few around, all food grade.

Decided to clean out a bit of the swirl filter today. Used a siphon hose to drain from the bottom. It does have a tap for that but its 40mm and the flow comes out too fast.
I gave away a 10ltr bottle of fish poo and a 20ltr bucket to a mate. And got sick of cleaning after dumping 80ltrs onto the dirt garden. Its raining now so that should wash it in. The half ltr bottles you get in shops say to mix a cap full with 9ltrs of water. Still more in there so I'll keep dumping it on the dirt garden and in with the compost.

Or they will be dead ones. I kept it away from the plants a bit. But am thinking it was probaby enough fert to do a big area. The rain will mix it up a little. Does give you an idea of how much waste a system will process. Before the swirl filter the gb's would of gotten the extra solids and the worms would of mineralised them.

New smaller system design. Barrel on the left is a ABF that the sump feeds into. It will have 6x150\200ltr gbs.
I think the tank is 1500ltrs ish. Bell siphon or flout in the tank to control the F&D cycles and a 40mm sequencing valve to direct flow to the gb's.

Next one is going to be more intensive. I'd had 400ish fingerlings in a 380ltr tank for months with zero readings and was wondering how many fish I could grow out in a larger tank. I'd like to try trout or Barra but it all depends on time of year and how fast I can get it finished and cycled. The FT is now a 4500ltr rainwater tank that I unloaded today. And the original ft is now the sump, so its growing. ABF is a 200ltr olive drum if i can pump enough o2 through it.

Almost got all of the corn out of the system from the max hybrid seeds.

I love the picture of that corn. What type of media did you grow that in?

dufflight
03-08-2010, 02:28 PM
Media was clay over gravel. I like to topdress a GB with clay but the bulk of the media is gravel or river rock. If you go 100% clay then corn can fall over. But with the gravel underneath it gets a firm grip.

dufflight

Hooked up a couple more gb's today. They are ment to be 600ltr ones but they look more like the 500ltr ones. Hooked both up together and am still working out if I will connect to one siphon or a single slow drain. The out let is only 40mm so I may try both. I've been toying with the mega siphon that controls a group of gb's with one siphon. Got a lot of spare water so it does not effect the system to fill a lot of gb's at the same time.
Gravel turned up today as well. Forgot about that stuff.
Have 2 more 380ltr gb's to plumb up as soon as I can move George. A 1000ltr ish rainwater tank will be the new external ABF or a gb, depending on how I feel after moving all that gravel by hand again.

One of them :D

But this is all going into the pool ground. I'm yet to invade the backyard with AP but its coming. The 4500ltr tank may end up staying out there and I'll pipe to the gb's through the fence.

Filled one of the gb's today. 2 buckets and 1.5hrs. Hope to get the second one filled in the morning. Think I will go with the slow drain. I have a spare 10000lpr pump I can put on a timer to fill them once per hr. Will run them 24/7 for a few days to season the gravel a bit.

This one uses half a 200ltr drum filled with bio balls and a bread crate on both ends. I pump 150ltr ish of air through it a minute. The air keeps the water moving through the media. Its located in the pool and has been running for a year or more. This type of bio filter allows me to proccess the Am & Ni for 500ish fish in 50000ltrs of water. Some of the fish are over the 1kg mark. I was expecting it to need cleaning by now but my guess is compost worms are living in it now. The other ABF I use has media that moves around and never needs cleaning. I think any air pumped into a system should go through a bio filter of some kind. The faster a system changes ammonia and nitrite the better it can cope with different fish loads. I had a seperate 380ltr tank that had water moving through it from the pool with an ABF and 400 fingerlings. The pool showed a small amount of Am but the water comming through the fingerlings tank showed zero. Since using airlift bio filters I don't get Am or Ni readings unless I throw a heap of Urea or new fish in. And then it only shows a reading until the bacteria take up the slack.

badflash
05-16-2010, 06:30 PM
I think you should pump air before & after the bio filter. The bio filter eats oxy to work and can deplete the oxygen from the water. Giving it a boost after gets the O2 up for the fish.

As long as the bubbles travel through the water after the bio filter there should still be some o2 getting into the water. I've been meaning to try a baffled box to slow down the bubbles to give them more time to exchange o2.

Duff-
Intensive tilapia culture requires near saturation levels of oxygen. Warmer temps needed for them also needs to drive mre oxygen into the water as the warmer the water is, the less oxy it holds. Probably not needed for other species.

Didn't want to sink to start with. Resisted the urge to jump in it. Put some duckweed in and will give it a few days before dropping a few fish in. I can put mesh over the top to stop birds.

I have tried duckweed and failed. Can you give me some tips on how to be successful?
Water Temp.
Type of water.
Can you grow with a light indoors
Nutrients.
Ph.
Etc....
Any thoughts.
Thanks
Kenny

Warm water that does not move to much. It likes ammonia and its hard to grow if the fish keep eating it.

I grow it in aqauriums that have no fish that eat it Warm water ~80F, lots of light, no power filters to suck it up. Loves fish water.
Here is a shot of a couple of 20 gallon tanks with a 4' shoplight over it. I use daylight bulbs. What you see is a mix of african frogbit and duckweed. Give it light and warmth and you can't stop it.

I have in the past unintentionally grown it in kiddie pools that I was using for daphnia. I kept these outside in partial sun, and water fertilized with miracle grow. The duckweed was a nuisance at the time, but I also appreciated it for nitrate removal, and for keeping the water a bit cooler for the daphnia, so I did not eradicate it. Downside was that it competed with the greenwater that I was trying to culture. I found that with the fertilization that it was very difficult not to grow. I could literally skim out 50% and two days later had 100% coverage again. I also found that rainwater worked better than my tapwater. I would assume that this had to do with PH.
Now that I am growing tilapia, next year I will set up several of these kiddie pools for duckweed cultures.

I have also had it grow quite well in indoor tanks with red cherry shrimp that were minimally filtered(sponge filters) and a 4 foot twin shop light. Grew very well, but if you want economical production, capitalize on the sun during the outdoor growing season.

I have lots of freezer space, and next year hope to freeze some for winter fodder, and possibly dry it. I have heard mixed reports of the palatability of dried duckweed. I imagine if it were rehydrated, and allowed to grow some bacteria, and slightly decompose that it will be like filet mignon oreochromis style.

Did have a wind storm the other week. It bent some of the garlic in half but they are still growing. The second last photo is of runt tomato seedlings I quickly pushed into the gravel the other week.

Will have some pictures of some dead fish in the next week or so. Am digging a sump so I can connect a 4500ltr tank into the system. Will drain the pool and harvest all the larger fish. The pool is going to end up either a pool or a rainwater tank with fish. Like the idea of one big cod swiming around in it.

Sump1 is going to be a 1300ltr tank in the ground, all the gb's will drain back to it. Connected to this will be a 600ltr GB that will work like a tidal tank\sump. When water is pumped out of the sump it will drain the gb beside it. Will be a chop2\hybrid design. SLO from the tank may go into a 600ltr GB that will siphon into the sump.
