If you've never heard of SHCS and you are getting ready to build a new greenhouse...you need to research this method of heating and cooling thoroughly....you can cool and heat for only pennies a day :o

Love that music...calming.
Solar...anyone see the beer can videos where they paint them flat black then sealed into a case where the heat is ducted into a home or shop? I must make one for next winter, I shall make one!

I've had my eye on that design for quite a while. I need to buy a backhoe. The concept is so simple and elegant.

Hmmm, I can rent a Backhoe for $99 a day and $150 p/u and delivery ..... maybe after I get those Tilapia from Jack ..........

I've been following this design for a long time. I have some support documents pertaining to SHCS but they aren't allowed on here or might be too large to post.
Their website:

Thanks for the posts. What do you mean by "but they aren't allowed on here"?
Welcome, btw.

badflash, when I tried to post a pdf document and the site wouldn't allow it. (The extension pdf is not allowed.) Here's the message, I tried to attach it again. Not sure if it was too big or because I'm a newbie member. The file is 1.91MB might be the problem.
The document was put out by HUD in 1994 and shows how to isolate your foundation from the cold air above ground and at the same time capture the ambient warmth in the soil below. It's part of the information on how SHCS works. I have a design in mind but as always ideas and money aren't linked together when it comes to bringing a concept to fruition.
Email me the file at admin@diyaqauponics.com and I will see what I can do for you

The extension pdf is not allowed.
I tried again to post the PDF's for SHCS but I only get the message above.
Sorry folks, maybe the administrator can post them but I need an email address so I can send them.
admin@diyaquaponics.com is the email you need.

The documents for SHCS were sent on March 14, 2011 to the Administrator.
Maybe I'm not the only one having a tough time getting the PDF's to post!
I'm still trying to recover from the site being hacked....in case you haven't noticed, now all the avatars have disappeared. So, even thouth I install a new updated script, some reminants of info still exists in the database and now I'm looking for a worm file that they may have put in to do dirty deeds over a period of time.
Anyway, I looked at the PDFs and most had a big copyright stamp right across the pages so I can't put those up on here :( and one of them, even though it appeared to be a PDF, its pages were actually images (the print was on the images) so I can't use it. :(
The only one that was a true PDF still needs to be investigated for copyrights before I go any further with it but I will get to it.

I installed my version of one of these when building my greenhouse.
It got a good test last night when the temps outside went down to 22F.
By 7am the next morning, the inside GH temp was 38F and the air coming out of the SHCS fan was measuring 43F.
I didn't use an air heater that night but did have a 1500 watt water heater on in the main 250 gallon fish tank from 9pm until 3am. The water temp in the fish tank was 66F when I checked it in the morning. The water circulates thru five 50 gallon grow beds full of expanded clay which makes a rather large heat sink.
My design is different than Mr Hobbit's in that I could only dig down 16 inches doing only only one level and only had enough room for (4) 4" perforated ADS lines that run from one end of the dome to the the other. Each line is about 20 feet long and all join in a plenum at one end.
I could post a few pics if anyone is interested.
