Hello Friends,
After pouring over some literature I stumbled upon a great article. I encourage all those that are intersted in maximizing thier tilapia production to check it out: Aquaculture Research, 2007, http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CBwQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.reprofish.eu%2Freprofish_eng% 2Fcontent%2Fdownload%2F3422%2F37288%2Fversion%2F1% 2Ffile%2FSpawning_photoperiod%26temperature.pdf&rct=j&q=Aquaculture%20Research%2C%202007%2C%20%5Bb%5D38% 5Bb%5D%2C%201242-1247.%20&ei=_bRZTO6JEYqRsAbE4KT9Cw&usg=AFQjCNHnKXfFFBedLdQxu34Hn8bp8ZaUDg&cad=rja.
In a nutshell the study concluded, "The number of eggs per female, number of eggs per spawn, and number of spawnings per female was significantly higher when the photo-period was 12D:12D (Kawanna).

Being tropical fish from near the equator, 12 on/12 off yould be what they have evolved in.
