Hi I am near Tyler Texas. I have a green thumb and read about aquaponics recently. I would love to build a small indoor system using an existing 10 gallon tropical aquarium. Would like to grow herbs. My wife thinks this is a crazy idea! Is this possible?

There are several people on here who have small systems like that. I plan on building one while I save up for my big system. Nothing like mint plants to freshen up a house.

Welcome HaroldB. Show your wife what a good idea it is. Then when that's going good you can show her your plans for a larger version. :D

I started by just growing spouts in a mason jar....
I had a 1 gallon FT and put a plant on top using Styrofoam....It grew so big I had to transplant..
I now have system using a 37 gallon tote as a FT with about 150-200 guppies....love them little guys...
(all they do is eat and mate)
I still do sprouts but now I use a 18 gallon tote and misting system that automatically mists the sprouts every 6 hours...
systems can be any size and/or configuration as long as the basics are there...
Highly recommend reading Oliver's AP101 thread on this site.
Welcome to the addiction...

Don, does your mister system use the water from the fish tank or do you just use tap water?

I have the mister system on a water timer from my faucet...
Sprouts only need fresh water but since I was using the water anyway...I just directed the drain to my FT
So now I do not have to worry about my system water levels....
Although I like to tinker too much...It is safer for my system to be automated as much as possible...
