View Full Version : New Greenhouse project- anyone using rocket mass for heat?

Working on my AP greenhouse, just thought I would post some construction pics. Got most of the basic framing up, insulating the floor and filling with gravel. Got a duckweed pool going and a lot of work to go, but I was wondering about heat, both solar and additional heat for those cold days. Is anybody using a Rocket mass heater with water storage in their greenhouse? I was thinking about combining two 330 gallon totes for storage, and pumping it thru Pex in the gravel to deliver the heat. The rocket would heat the air quick and the water would keep the greenhouse warm long after. Any ideas or comments?

Looks like a good start. I am planning to use similar ideas for heat. I plan on using a solar hydronic system to heat water which in turn heats the ground. The water used to store heat for the solar heat is also heated by a rocket stove. The stove then heats the air and water. I am working on a waste oil and/or wood pellet fire unit to give longer run times. I have not implemented this yet, but it seems like a great idea!

am planning on building something like this to heat my water, it is similar to a rocket mass heater.

Sorry to be so long since last post. Here's the latest pics, still have some door/window trim work to do. It's double layer 6ml plastic with an inflation fan.
Four double pane recycled windows on the far end for summer air flow.
You can see the round 275 tank and the 55 Gal swirl filter inside, just getting started setting up inside.
I'm going to be using a 275 tote for the sump. Grow beds will be on the south far side and anywhere I can squeeze them.

I left an access flap on the far side for moving in/out large items.

Where can i find info to build a similair double walled greenhouse? How is it holding up against the winter cold?

We need more info on this awesome greenhouse!

I saw a video on you tube about a rocket mass heater in cold weather climate and aquaponics in a geodesic dome greenhouse. Very sharp individual. Type in "bigalow brook farm rocket stove". Hope I'm not breaking any rules on this forum, and hopefully this will give you some ideas. I am currently building my first prototype rocket stove. Nice job on your build! Good luck and let us know what you come up with. Aquaally
