Get a demand feeder. They cost about $100 and respond to the fish hitting a target. No power, the the fish feed when they are hungry. The electronic feeders don't work nearly as well.

Anybody ever see anything like this in action or have any other comments about automatic feeders in general?

I use the "Fish Mate" for when I'm gone, it drops straight down into the FT and lasts for quite a while ... 4 or 5 weeks, I think (I'd have to find the paperwork again), but the amount it feeds is adjustable, feeds flakes or pellets ..... I use disks and use the flake setting, works fine. The only other one I've used is a little cheapie wind up one, and I wasn't a bit happy with it because it only dispenses very little at a time. Just my 2 centavos .......

Has any body seen any "do it yourself" links for this?

I Like the idea but am really broke right now.

That was a DIY link I posted.

The beauty of a demad feeder is that they DON'T set up camp there. There is no reason to. They can feed whenever they are hungry and leave when they are not. Each fish gets its fill and no more. You use less feed, and the fish grow up to 3 times as fast. No power required and you may only need to add feed once a week.
