I am looking for a local source of straight run Tilapia fry in Northeastern PA, USA. I would be interested in both Orange T-Mossambica and T-Hornorum, both male and female. Anyone in here offering small quantities of fry for sale? This will be for an indoor aquaponics system for a high school student project.

I will post this warning here... FISH AND WILDLIFE PERSONNEL HERE IN FLORIDA are always looking for persons who sell Tilapia as they are illegal to own, sell or ship in certain areas, not only here but in a lot of states. Check you local laws before ordering or selling and shipping.

I believe Tilapia are legal in PA, they will not survive the colder winters so they are not invasive. Of course, I will make some calls before committing to any purchase.
Here is a good thread where illegal species are being compiled: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/ar ... 80538.html (http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-80538.html)

This may or may not apply to you in your state:

State Tilapia Regulations (http://www.diyaquaponics.com/forum/showthread.php?636-State-Tilapia-Regulations/page2)

Pennsylvania
An "artificial propagation license" is required
http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/se ... cation.pdf (http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/gateway/PTARGS_0_2_24476_10297_0_43/AgWebsite/Files/Forms/Artificial%20Propagation%20Reg%20Application.pdf)

$150.00 Takes 4-6 weeks.

I am pretty sure this only applies to commercial facilities. Since this is considered a hobby project with no commercial sales, it should not apply.
Either way, I am still interested in sourcing Tilapia Fry to Northeastern PA.

White Brook Tilapia Farm is a great, reliable source.

I like what they offer but I was hoping to start out a bit on the cheaper side.

The cheapest I have seen is 25 fingerlings for $82.50, delivered. From http://fishkis.com/Buy_Tilapia.html. I have never dealt with them.

Might want to check Craigslist. In Ohio, there are 2 on Craigslist, but seem to need to pick up.
