I do it....works fine for me. Except it takes pumps with higher amounts of head pressure. This in turn results in higher $ for the pumps. The cheap ones will not work. Save time, money, fish and just buy the expensive ones at the get go.
I don't buy a pump anymore that's under $180.

Depending on how big your pond is, the head pressure needed and how many gph you need.
I recently, early last month switched over to a shallow well pump activated via a float switch. Some folks advise against it, but so far it works well for me. It doesn't cycle on/off as often as many of the smaller units, but for the larger amounts of water I need....and the longer periods of time for it to cycle it does work for me.
I have read though that this shortens the life of the pump....so if an option buy the direct replacement no questions asked insurance.
There's always more than one way to do it though. Look at your needs, and then compare pumps. There's a great many out there, each seem to have their own pros/cons.
Good luck.
