Tropical fish in Canada- doing things the hard way

Greetings,

I've been enjoying and absorbing the posts here for the past week,
and I'm very impressed with the friendly, co-operative
and candid interactions on this forum.

To be honest, the clincher for me to join the forum
is the authouritative yet unassuming stream of posts by badflash.
He even looks like me, poor feller.

I'm a retired (due to a stroke) paramedic and counselor
located in the beautiful Fraser Canyon,
three hours inland from Vancouver, BC, Canada.
We are off the grid with our lovely stream supplying 20 Kw of electricity,
and mostly self-sufficient on our 10 acres of rocks and trees.
The only thing we lack is dirt!

I'm new to aquaponics and tilapia,
but many years ago while attending university
I supported my family by raising angel fish for the pet trade.
If only I had saved all of those tanks and pumps :-(

I grew up on the Washington Peninsula across from Victoria. Nice country up there. You might want to consider Yellow Perch instead of Tilapia. Not much growing season up there with high enough temps. YP/or even rainbow trout love the cooler faster moving water. And you should have enough fall in elevation for more of a "poor-man's" raceway. Easier on the electricity that way, letting gravity drop the water for you. Just a thought.

Hope the stroke issue is resolved. Had a stress induced heart attack a while back....put things in perspective quick.
