So...I haven't had a chance to introduce myself. I live in Massachusetts. I went to school for agriculture, became very interested in hydroponics...now it's come full circle to growing meat and potatoes together...so to speak....

I've grown bunches of "easy fish" in the past...and have kept some alive for several years...moving is a killer on fish.

Anyway...I'm Grower and Greenhouse manager at the farm I work at. I've talked the farm manager into a small aquaponics setup in the greenhouse...of course I would stock the tank from my home aquarium setup. I'm looking at either blue's or a supermale breeding set as "parent stock" from http://www.miami-aquaculture.com/tilapia.htm
Anyone have experience with these sets and can give me any info that the site may not? Are these fish genetically modified, or hormone sex switched?...or is this a result of some lab assisted "natural" cross....like asparagus...?

Is anyone here using a fish food that is labelled organic? I am also growing out some duckweed and something called mosquitoes fern that i plan on helping out with food. Can I feed them leafy stuff from the greenhouse? pak choi, lettuce, beet greens...that kind of stuff, carrot greens?...i'm thinking of stuff i throw away alot of....My greenhouse is certified organic :ugeek: ..so i'd like to raise the fish as such if possible.

Alrighty, I'll post some pictures of what I have so far and how it goes along the way.
Here in Taxachusetts...you need a permit to have tilapia. I'm being a good dolphin and jumping the hoops...however....I think the setting up of the whole thing will be quite the adventure.....the first chapter...supporting my floor to accomodate 2k LBS of water and equipment  Of course I'm going to get everything setup and some water in the tank before the final supporting....maybe throw some carp in there till I get my fish....Ok then....Off to clean...apparently I have to have the health inspector check off on my using my tank wastewater as "lawn and shrub water"....and for some reason that requires a visit from local inspector :?
